Heating, dinner and EV charging: a long stay gives you room to work with

Dinner needs cooking now, the home needs heat, but the car will remain on the drive until morning. In an electrically heated home, that difference in timing creates valuable flexibility. Charging can adapt during the long stay as other household loads rise and fall.

When designing the system, consider not just appliance power but when each device runs. That is how charging can fit comfortably around the evening routine.

The grid connection sees electrical demand

A heat pump's heating output describes the heat it can deliver. Its electrical input is what loads the supply. Find both figures in the documentation and include any electrical backup heater.

Kitchen loads also fluctuate: an oven may draw differently while heating up and while holding temperature. Ratings matter for design; the power remaining for charging depends on which appliances run together.

For the car, start with the energy that needs replacing. The charger may be capable of more, while a moderate evening top-up is enough for the next working day.

How much energy fits into a changing evening?

Our example aims to deliver 24 kWh at the charger. The car is home from 18:00 to 06:00 and accepts up to 11 kW alternating-current (AC) charging. The figures below are what remains for the car after household consumption and electrical constraints.

By 22:00, 19.32 kWh has passed through the charger. Another 4.68 kWh is needed to reach the 24 kWh target, taking about 26 minutes at 11 kW. Under these assumptions, charging could finish at roughly 22:26.

The table is invented, not a measured heat-pump cycle or guaranteed charging time. Less energy may reach the battery than the charger measures.

Lower evening power does not necessarily mean a morning shortfall

In the example, charging slowed during cooking catches up later. The long parking period provides the flexibility, so dinner need not revolve around the car.

Also test a worse case. If the car received no power from 18:00 to 20:00, the next two hours would deliver 11.04 kWh. The remaining 12.96 kWh would take about 1 hour 11 minutes at 11 kW, finishing around 23:11.

That headroom exists only because capacity becomes available later. A heavily loaded home all night, or a car leaving again in the evening, may need a different plan.

Sense adapts charging to the home

Zaptec Sense uses household consumption data to adjust the current available for charging, making use of capacity as it is released. The manufacturer's Sense description explains the measurement and control relationship.

In this plan, Sense controls EV charging only; the heat pump retains its own temperature and operating controls. They work together by respecting the shared electrical capacity.

Measurement and limits must suit the site. In a three-phase home, phase loading matters: one heavily loaded phase can restrict the entire charge.

Test a demanding winter day

A pleasant summer evening says little about heating season. Check cold weather, higher hot-water demand and occasions when unusually many appliances run together.

Include a high-mileage day too. If more than 24 kWh is needed, establish the replenishment time and margin before departure.

A reassuring test meets the planned charging target while the home operates normally. One moment of lower charging power does not by itself predict the morning result.

Describe the whole evening during the survey

Have the heat-pump model and electrical data, main-fuse rating per phase and car's AC charging capability ready. Add the usual large evening loads and morning departure time.

The survey can then assess energy delivery across the entire stay and select a charger and dynamic load-balancing setup around family life.
