The car is in a detached garage and you have already left with the family in another vehicle. You want to check from the road that charging started correctly. What matters is not the internet speed in the living room, but whether the charger itself has a working connection.
Built-in mobile connectivity can be particularly useful when the home's Wi-Fi barely reaches the parking area. Where mobile coverage is available, online services need not dictate that the charger sits near the router. The deciding factor is which connection works reliably at the installation point.
Remote checks need a connection at both ends
Your phone is at one end and the charger in the garage at the other. The phone can have fast mobile data while the charger cannot reach its remote service. The app may be installed, but it cannot show current charging status.
According to the manufacturer, Zaptec Go can connect using Wi-Fi or LTE-M mobile connectivity and receives software updates over the network (Zaptec Go user manual).
With a good connection you can use online charging features away from the garage. The electricity itself still comes from the home's supply.
One garage, two possible solutions
In our example, the charger would sit on the garage's rear wall so the cable reaches the car easily. The home router's signal is weak there: Wi-Fi works at the door but is unreliable at the proposed charger position.
One option is to extend the home network. The other is the chosen charger's mobile connection, provided coverage and the service are available. Both aim to keep the charger online and remotely manageable.
Do not test by opening a web page in the doorway. Check at the proposed installation position under everyday conditions, with the garage door closed and the car parked where it will charge.
Go and Go 2 use different mobile connections
Zaptec Go uses LTE-M. The Zaptec Go 2 data sheet specifies 4G LTE Cat 1; that model also has 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (Zaptec Go 2 data sheet).
An integrated eSIM identifies the charger on the mobile network. Zaptec makes this subject to availability, so check the terms for the chosen model. An eSIM does not create radio coverage by itself.
You need not become a radio-network expert, but the difference matters because the site test must use the actual model you plan to install. Your phone and charger may not use the same mobile network.
Zaptec's network guide likewise says coverage should be checked with the device concerned (Manufacturer's network requirements). A phone's signal indicator is a useful first clue; the charger's own connection provides the final answer.
Complete a real remote action during the test
If the chosen charger's mobile connection works in the garage, perform a usage test: begin a normal charge, then check its status on a phone using the phone's own mobile data.
This recreates exactly what you need: leaving the garage and viewing the current status later.
Make sure the data is fresh. A previously loaded screen is not the same as live charging status. If you need remote starting or other controls, test these separately with your own permissions and the selected operating mode.
If Wi-Fi is the better answer
A well-placed Wi-Fi access point may be best for your site. The installer and network administrator should then check the charger's network requirements. Zaptec documents 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and advises against guest networks that require browser login.
Ownership of the connection matters too. After changing the router or Wi-Fi password, check the charger's network settings and reconnect it if necessary. Add the charger to your list of networked devices so it is not overlooked during future changes.
A site test lets you choose between Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity based on what works in your garage, which is far more useful than a generic speed figure.
Three details that move the decision forward
Photograph the proposed charger position, mark the router's location and describe what you want to do remotely. If you have selected a model, include its exact name.
At handover, ask the installer to demonstrate the feature on your phone and record which connection the charger uses. Discuss offline charging separately: it is a different operating state and depends on the device and its settings.
